Brow Tinting: How to Get the Best Results, With or Without Lamination
Brow tinting is one of those services that looks simple from the outside, but there is a lot happening behind the scenes.
And if you've ever wondered why a tint can behave completely differently on freshly laminated brows compared to a tint-only appointment, you're not imagining it.
Laminated brow hair is more porous, so it can absorb colour more quickly.
That means your approach to tinting needs to take the condition of the brow hair into account.
But before we get into colour, let's clear up one of the biggest points of confusion:
A brow tint appointment and a brow lamination + tint appointment are not the same service with a few extra steps added.
The workflow is different.
At Van Isle Beauty Pro, we want you to feel confident about exactly what happens at each stage, so here's our professional guide to prepping, mapping, tinting and finishing brows, whether your client is booked for a tint only or an InLei® Brow Bomber lamination + tint.
First: What's the Difference Between the Two Services?
Here's the easiest way to think about it.
Tint-only appointment
Prep → Mapping → Tint → Wax
That's it.
You're working with the client's natural brow hair, so there is no chemical restructuring of the hair before you apply your tint.
Brow lamination + tint appointment
With an InLei® Brow Bomber service, your workflow is:
Prep → Step 1: Lift 1 → Mister Fix → Step 2: Lock 2 → Mapping → Tint → Wax → Step 3: Brow Bomber 3
The important thing to notice is that you do not need to completely re-cleanse the brows before tinting.
You've already completed your preparation at the beginning of the service.
This distinction is important because you don't want to accidentally treat your lamination + tint appointment as though you're starting a brand-new tint service halfway through.
Your Brow Tint-Only Workflow
Let's start with the simpler of the two services.
1. Prep: Cleanse + Saline
Begin by thoroughly cleansing the brows with a pH-balanced, oil-free cleanser.
We love the InLei® Gentle Foaming Mousse for this.
It is gentle enough for professional brow and lash services, removes makeup and impurities and is oil-free, making it a useful product to have both at your treatment station and on your retail shelf.
Once you've cleansed the brows, follow with your InLei® Pre-Saline Solution.
The goal is to make sure the brow hair is clean and free from oils or residue before you move into your tinting service.
2. Map Before You Tint
Once your brows are prepped, it's time to establish the shape.
Always map before applying tint.
This gives you and your client a chance to agree on the shape before any colour is applied.
It's also much easier to make adjustments to your mapping than it is to correct a dark tint that has highlighted an unwanted shape.
We love using the InLei® Pre-Coloured Thread together with the InLei® Flexible Brow Ruler to help create symmetry and consistent measurements.
And remember, your goal isn't to make two brows look like they're perfectly identical twins.
Natural brows aren't perfectly symmetrical.
You're looking for balance and harmony with your client's natural brow structure and facial features.
3. Choose the Colour
Now it's time to talk colour.
Don't assume that your client's desired brow colour is simply "brown."
Ask what they actually want their finished brows to look like.
Do they want soft and natural? Defined? Deep? Warm? Cool?
We recommend using the InLei® Tint Colour Book during your consultation so your client can see the shades in person and participate in choosing their colour.
You can also create custom mixes to achieve a more personalized result.
If colour mixing isn't something you're completely confident with yet, our Brow Tint Guide is a useful resource for understanding the InLei® colour chart and creating custom shades (pssst- it's only $10)
4. Mix Your Tint When You're Ready to Apply
Don't premix your tint and let it sit while you're still completing other parts of the service.
Once tint and developer are combined, oxidation begins.
You want the colour development to happen during the actual tinting process, on the brow.
Mix your tint and developer thoroughly according to the manufacturer's instructions. For InLei® tint, we recommend mixing thoroughly for approximately 1–2 minutes before application.
Once your mixture is properly combined, you're ready to apply.
5. Apply With Intention
Where you apply your tint first can affect the final result.
We like to begin through the middle of the brow, establishing the arch line first.
From there, work toward the tail and feather the colour through the shape.
Leave the front until last.
The front of the brow is where you want the softest finish.
Rather than loading the front with fresh product and allowing it to develop for the entire processing time, use what's left on your brush to lightly apply colour through the front.
This helps create a natural ombre effect and avoids that heavy, boxy appearance.
6. Remove and Stop the Colour Development
Once you're happy with the colour, remove the tint.
First, scoop the majority of the product away with a clean brush.
Then use a damp cotton pad to remove the remaining tint.
The moisture helps stop the colour from continuing to develop.
This is particularly important if you've achieved the colour you want and don't want it to continue getting deeper.
Your Brow Lamination + Tint Workflow
Now let's look at a full InLei® Brow Bomber appointment.
This is where the workflow changes.
1. Prep: Cleanse + Saline
Just like a tint-only appointment, you begin by preparing the brows.
Cleanser → Saline
Start with your pH-balanced, oil-free cleanser, followed by your InLei® Pre-Saline Solution.
Optional prep
Depending on your client's needs and your service protocol, you can also incorporate an exfoliation step using Soft Peeling - by InLei®
For clients who need additional skin preparation, products such as InLei® Lady Shield can also be incorporated where appropriate.
The important thing is to follow the specific product instructions for each preparation step and make sure the brow is ready for tinting.
You do not need to completely re-cleanse the brows before tinting later in the service.
Your initial preparation has already been completed.
2. Step 1: Lift 1
Apply InLei® Brow Bomber Lift 1 according to the manufacturer's instructions.
This is the first chemical step in restructuring the brow hair and preparing it to be repositioned.
Your application, placement and processing need to be controlled because you're changing the structure of the hair before moving onto the next stage.
3. Mister Fix
Next comes Mister Fix.
This helps keep the brow hairs in the desired position while you continue through the Brow Bomber system.
Make sure your hairs are positioned exactly where you want them before continuing.
4. Step 2: Lock 2
Now apply Brow Bomber Lock 2 according to the manufacturer's instructions.
This step helps set the newly positioned brow hairs.
Once you've completed this stage, you're ready to move into your shaping, mapping and tinting.
5. Map the Brows
Now you map.
Notice that mapping happens after the lamination steps and before tinting in this workflow.
This is a great opportunity to assess how the newly lifted and positioned brow hairs are sitting and establish the final shape with your client.
Use your mapping tools (thread + ruler) to create your outline and make sure your client is happy before moving into colour.
6. Tinting After Lamination Is Different
This is the part that makes a Brow Bomber + tint appointment different from a tint-only service.
The lamination process has changed the condition of the brow hair.
Laminated hair is more porous and can absorb tint more quickly.
So don't automatically use your standard tint processing time from a tint-only appointment.
Instead, consider:
-
How porous the hair is
-
The natural colour of the brow
-
The shade you've selected
-
Your client's desired result
-
How dark the colour is developing
When your client is worried about dark brows
This is a great opportunity to manage expectations before you apply.
Explain that you are intentionally going to be conservative with processing time because freshly laminated hair can take colour quickly.
We'd rather have the colour come out slightly lighter and be able to build more depth than go too dark from the beginning.
You can add colour. You can't simply undo it.
7. Apply Your Tint
The application technique remains intentional.
Start through the middle of the brow, establish your arch line and work toward the tail.
Then finish with the front of the brow using the remaining product on your brush.
This helps keep the front softer and creates that natural gradient rather than an overly solid block of colour.
Because you're working on laminated hair, keep a particularly close eye on how quickly the colour is developing.
8. Wax After Tinting
Once the tinting stage is complete, move into your brow waxing/shaping step according to your service protocol.
This allows you to clean up the mapped shape and remove unwanted hair once you've established your colour.
9. Step 3: Brow Bomber 3
Once your tint and wax are complete, finish your Brow Bomber service with Step 3: Brow Bomber 3 according to the InLei® system instructions.
This is your finishing treatment for the laminated brow.
And just like your tinting technique, your finishing care is part of the overall service.
A Note on Tint Processing Time
There isn't one processing time that works for every brow.
And that's especially true when comparing tint-only clients with clients who have just had a lamination.
A tint-only client has untreated brow hair.
A lamination + tint client has hair that has just undergone a chemical restructuring process.
The hair you're tinting is different.
So rather than blindly following the same timing for every client, learn to assess the hair and monitor the colour as it develops.
And when you've found a timing and formula your client loves?
Write it down.
Keep Client Colour Records
Your client notes are one of the most useful tools in your salon.
Record:
-
Tint shades
-
Custom colour formula
-
Developer
-
Processing time
-
Whether the client had a lamination
-
Any adjustments you made
-
Your client's feedback on the final colour
If they return six weeks later and say:
"I loved my brows last time. Can we do exactly the same?"
You won't have to guess.
You'll have the formula and processing time right there.
Brow Tint Aftercare
Your client's brow routine doesn't end when they leave your salon.
We recommend InLei® Fashion Lash & Brow as part of a professional brow aftercare routine.
It helps keep the brow hair conditioned while helping protect against environmental factors such as UV exposure and pollution.
It's also an easy product to incorporate into your retail recommendations.
Your client has invested in their brow service. Giving them a simple product to use at home helps them continue caring for their brows between appointments.
The Two Workflows at a Glance
If you only remember one thing from this article, make it this:
TINT ONLY
Prep
Cleanser → Saline

Finish
Wax
BROW LAMINATION + TINT
Prep
Cleanser → Saline
Optional: Exfoliation → Lady Shield
Lamination
Step 1: Lift 1 → Mister Fix → Step 2: Lock 2

The important part?
You don't restart your prep before tinting after a lamination.
Your brows were already cleansed and prepared at the beginning of the appointment.
Professional Brow Tinting Is About More Than Colour
A beautiful tint isn't just about picking the right shade.
It's about understanding the condition of the brow hair, preparing properly, mapping with your client, applying strategically and knowing when to stop the colour from developing.
And when you're combining tint with lamination, understanding how the previous chemical steps have affected the hair becomes even more important.
Same tint. Different hair. Different approach.
That's what makes professional brow tinting a skill worth learning.
